Positive society - The new norm?

It’s a funny old world. Most of us rose through schooling and perhaps, for some, university, before being thrust into the adult world. No life belts here, we’re expected to know how to swim as soon as we get into that water. Lest we forget the dangers that lurk in the deep blue: the sharks circling in the depths below; the onslaught of cold water rushing over our bodies, the long, tough endurance swim ahead. Don’t forget to dodge the oncoming ships and boats carrying the lucky few with them.

Of course, I’m talking about money management here - we are expected to know how to manage an income, expenditure, understand credit cards, loans, credit ratings, mortgages, saving, investing and all the other fun stuff that’s thrown our way. The end result, we start to fall down into what I’d term ‘negative society’ with the ever growing reliance on credit to buy our lifestyle, dare I say our temporary happiness (that dophimine hit for that impulse buy is short lived, until the next one). Of course, it’s not our fault, no one told us the rules when we were pushed off the pier into the waters below. We were left to swim onward, no instruction, no lifeboat in sight. Some will kick on and push strongly onwards but for many it’ll be a tough slog and as we fatigue start to drop deeper and deeper into the negative society depths.

It’s not all bad. Most of us will have a mortgage at some stage in life and we’ll chip away at that over time. Yes I get it, sometimes loans/ credit cards can come in handy, build credit ratings and be useful for certain needs.

All that said, It’s time to shift ourselves into positive society. The negative depths don’t have to be your future and it all starts with your behaviour change. From there we can form these great sustainable attitudes that will become the new norm:

  1. Spend less than you earn

  2. Control your credit card spending and pay it off monthly.

  3. Get into the regular savings habit each month and build your rainy day funds

  4. Start small and build your savings pot over time.

  5. Make it easy, affordable and maintain your discipline

  6. Save for the things you want and earn it

  7. Remove your reliance on credit for these short term fixes

  8. Control your money and importantly enjoy it!

It’s time to move out of negative society into positive society.
