The Three Pillars - Mental, Physical & Money Health

Last night I popped to the cinema to see ‘Joker’. A poor man by most standards, living with his mother in a dilapidated flat, struggling to hold down a job as a clown for hire, as he slowly deteriorates into a deeply concerning state. Short on laughs this one.

It got me thinking about how important the three pillars are; Mental, Physical and Money Health. The solid supports of life, and if one isn’t strong enough it’s quite easy for it all to come crumbling down.

Think about this – You live pay cheque to pay cheque, spending what you earn (and the rest). Debts build. That happy person you once were slowly fades away with the ongoing daily money stress. Frustration and anxiety become the new norm as your financial woes take hold. Those black clouds looming only darken further as your deep mood takes it’s hold on your physical health. Going to the gym, keeping lean and fit is the last thing on your mind with all these money worries and stress. Cooking and eating properly falls away and you start to see your physical health deteriorate, weight fades away, your skin greys, you become stressed and tired.

You see, Money, Mental and Physical health are all interlinked, more so than we dare to imagine. It doesn’t take seismic shifts to solidify these pillars, it’s gradual change, discipline and patience that reward you.

Money – Be aware of your money.  Spending less than you earn is knowing when to say yes, or when a night in with Netflix will do instead. Budgeting apps and banks like Monzo or Starling are a great starting point to taking back control which make it easy to track your income and expenses.

Mental – By being in control of our money, it’s one less stress on an already packed schedule. It frees the mind to focus on other things. You want to enjoy your money not be stressed out by it.

Try a spot of morning ‘Mindfulness’ in the shower or check out apps like Calm or Headspace to keep you well balanced.

Physical – How much better do you feel having got out for some fresh air, sneaked in some early morning/post work exercise. That release of endorphins feeds the body and the mind giving you a very welcome positive kick. It maintains that important physical pillar.

Blast the ‘7-minute work app’, follow ‘Yoga with Adriene’ on Youtube, or get out for a run or a refreshing walk through the park. Your body will thank you for it.

Sure, the pendulum of life will continue to swing from positive to negative; that is life after all, However, with some care and attention you might just find that balance your looking for to keep those three pillars standing strong.
